PARABLE OF PENCIL

Parable Of A Pencil

The Pencil Maker took the pencil aside, just before putting him into the box. "There are 5 things you need to know", he told the pencil, "before I send you out into the world. Always remember them and never forget, and you will become the best pencil you can be." ONE: "You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in Someone's hand." TWO: "You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but you'll need it to become a better pencil." THREE: "You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make." FOUR: "The most important part of you will always be what's inside." AND FIVE: "On every surface you are used on, you must leave your mark. No matter what the condition, you must continue to write." The pencil understood and promised to remember, and went into the box with purpose in its heart. Now replacing the place of the pencil with you; always remember them and never forget, and you will become the best person you can be. "Only a good humanbeing can become a good leader."

WALK YOUR OWN WALK

WALK YOUR OWN WALK

You have to walk your own walk in this life. And as you are traveling down your road, don’t look down at your feet. Keep your head up and your eyes focused on what you know to be true. Be neither a follower nor a leader. You are not forsaken; you are forgiven, and when shadows exist simply find higher ground to tread upon. If you come across an obstacle or an impasse, pay mind to it but don’t focus on it for too long or your feet may sink into the quicksand that surrounds it. Find the courage to surmount it and continue on your journey. Offer your hand to those you come across who are stuck in their own personal sand traps, but do not point them in the direction you feel they must go, that has to be their decision. Only imply to them that they are never alone, and they will eventually find their way. When you get to where you are going and you look back, it is your own footprints you are going to want to see, not someone else’s. The importance of your trials and tribulations is a gift to be beholden, for that is how you will learn whom you truly are.

LEADERSHIP –THE MAN ON WHITE HORSE

The Lid
The higher you climb, the more need leadership.

Phase 3 ~ I Grow And Know And It Starts To Know
You can be a great leader, but it won’t happen in a day. Start paying the price now.
Phase 4 ~ I Simple go Because of What I Know
Frightening your way up

The Navigation

The larger the organization the more clearly the leader has to be able to see ahead.
Every past success and failure can be the source of information & wisdom –if you allow it to be. However no matter how much you learn from the past. It will never tell you all you need to know about the present. Realistic leaders are objective enough to minimize illusions. They understand that self-deception can cost them there vision. It is difficulty balancing optimize & realism, intuition & planning, faith & fact. But that’s what it takes to be effective as a navigation leader.

Hum honge kamyab... ek din

I found myself watching the men and women marching towards 7 Race Course Road, carrying the Indian Flag.

Who are these people who will spend their Sunday braving lathis and teargas shells?

Why are they so determined, so daring, so dedicated to the cause of India Against Corruption?

What did they hope to achieve today?

I believe India Against Corruption is a revolution. In fact, it is a second war for independence and no such war was ever won in a day.

When Team Anna’s second anshan ran out of steam, the cynics muttered ‘I told you so’. In a way, watching them ‘fail’ is reassuring for the vast majority who have merely been onlookers.. It confirms that we did the right thing by not moving our butts.

Because ‘ultimately kuch nahin ho sakta hai.’

It’s true. Itni jaldi kuch nahin ho sakta hai. The vast, deeply entrenched and securely guarded edifice of corruption in our country cannot be brought down in a day. Or a month, or a year, or even ten years.

But that cannot stop those who believe it can and must be brought down.

So far the IAC had but the passion of its foot soldiers. And the cannonball of media. Going forward, it will need new weapons, and tactics.

How will this campaign of the people and by the people stretch its tiny funds to fuel its giant ambitions?

Nobody knows but faith will keep them going.

Faith that one day, you and me, and all the citizens of this great country will rise up and stand with them. Because, truth can and must prevail.

The essence of Leadership

 The essence of leadership

A leader is an agent of change, and progress is about change. In the words of Robert F Kennedy, 'Progress is a nice word; but change is its motivator.'

Leadership is about raising the aspirations of followers and enthusing people with a desire to reach for the stars. For instance, Mahatma Gandhi created a vision for independence in India  and raised the aspirations of our people.

Leadership is about making people say, 'I will walk on water for you.' It is about creating a worthy dream and helping people achieve it.

Robert Kennedy , summed up leadership best when he said, 'Others see things as they are and wonder why; I see them as they are not and say why not?'

Adversity

A leader has to raise the confidence of followers. He should make them understand that tough times are part of life and that they will come out better at the end of it. He has to sustain their hope, and their energy levels to handle the difficult days.

There is no better example of this than Winston Churchill. His courageous leadership as prime minister for Great Britain successfully led the British people from the brink of defeat during World War II. He raised his people's hopes with the words, 'These are not dark days; these are great days -- the greatest days our country has ever lived.'

Never is strong leadership more needed than in a crisis. In the words of Seneca, the Greek philosopher, 'Fire is the test of gold; adversity, of strong men.'

Values

The leader has to create hope. He has to create a plausible story about a better future for the organisation: everyone should be able to see the rainbow and catch a part of it.

This requires creating trust in people. And to create trust, the leader has to subscribe to a value system: a protocol for behavior that enhances the confidence, commitment and enthusiasm of the people.

Compliance to a value system creates the environment for people to have high aspirations, self esteem, belief in fundamental values, confidence in the future and the enthusiasm necessary to take up apparently difficult tasks. Leaders have to walk the talk and demonstrate their commitment to a value system.

As Mahatma Gandhi said, 'We must become the change we want to see in the world.' Leaders have to prove their belief in sacrifice and hard work. Such behavior will enthuse the employees to make bigger sacrifices. It will help win the team's confidence, help leaders become credible, and help create trust in their ideas.

Enhancing trust

Trust and confidence can only exist where there is a premium on transparency. The leader has to create an environment where each person feels secure enough to be able to disclose his or her mistakes, and resolves to improve.

Investors respect such organisations. Investors understand that the business will have good times and bad times. What they want you to do is to level with them at all times. They want you to disclose bad news on a proactive basis. At Infosys [ Get Quote ], our philosophy has always been, 'When in doubt, disclose.'

Governance

Good corporate governance is about maximising shareholder value on a sustainable basis while ensuring fairness to all stakeholders: customers, vendor-partners, investors, employees, government and society.

A successful organisation tides over many downturns. The best index of success is its longevity. This is predicated on adhering to the finest levels of corporate governance.

At Infosys, we have consistently adopted transparency and disclosure standards even before law mandated it. In 1995, Infosys suffered losses in the secondary market. Under Indian GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles), we were not required to make this information public. Nevertheless, we published this information in our annual report.

Fearless environment

Transparency about the organisation's operations should be accompanied by an open environment inside the organisation. You have to create an environment where any employee can disagree with you without fear of reprisal.

In such a case, everyone makes suggestions for the common good. In the end everyone will be better off.

On the other hand, at Enron, the CFO was running an empire where people were afraid to speak. In some other cases, the whistle blowers have been harassed and thrown out of the company.

Managerial remuneration

We have gone towards excessive salaries and options for senior management staff. At one company, the CEO's employment contract not only set out the model of the Mercedes  the company would buy him, but also promised a monthly first-class air ticket for his mother, along with a cash bonus of $10 million and other benefits.

Not surprisingly, this company has already filed for bankruptcy.

Managerial remuneration should be based on three principles:

  • Fairness with respect to the compensation of other employees;
  • Transparency with respect to shareholders and employees;
  • Accountability with respect to linking compensation with corporate performance.

Thus, the compensation should have a fixed component and a variable component. The variable component should be linked to achieving long-term objectives of the firm. Senior management should swim or sink with the fortunes of the company.

Senior management compensation should be reviewed by the compensation committee of the board, which should consist only of independent directors. Further, this should be approved by the shareholders.

I've been asked, 'How can I ask for limits on senior management compensation when I have made millions myself?' A fair question with a straightforward answer: two systems are at play here. One is that of the promoter, the risk taker and the capital markets; and the other is that of professional management and compensation structures.

One cannot mix these two distinct systems, otherwise entrepreneurship will be stifled, and no new companies will come up, no progress can take place. At the same time, there has to be fairness in compensation: there cannot be huge differences between the top most and the bottom rung of the ladder within an organisation.

PSPD model

A well run organisation embraces and practices a sound Predictability-Sustainability-Profitability-Derisking (we call this the PSPD model at Infosys) model. Indeed, the long-term success of an organisation depends on having a model that scales up profitably.

Further, every organisation must have a good derisking approach that recognises, measures and mitigates risk along every dimension.

Integrity

Strong leadership in adverse times helps win the trust of the stakeholders, making it more likely that they will stand by you in your hour of need. As leaders who dream of growth and progress, integrity is your most wanted attribute.

Lead your teams to fight for the truth and never compromise on your values. I am confident that our corporate leaders, through honest and desirable behaviour, will reap long-term benefits for their stakeholders.

Two mottos

In conclusion, keep in mind two Sanskrit sentences: Sathyannasti Paro Dharma (there is no dharma greater than adherence to truth); and Satyameva jayate (truth alone triumphs). Let these be your motto for good corporate leadership.

BE AWESOME...

Be Awesome...

So what does it take for you to make a change? Do you change because it’s the best thing to do? Or do you procrastinate, and only change when you’re forced to?

Making a change is often like having to fire someone, end a relationship, or pulling a tooth: Better to get it over with.

This is a very relevant topic for me because I’ve recently come to grips with a situation in my ...own life…

I like to think I embrace change. I never procrastinate; I just get things done. When I see how changing something will improve my life, I do it. I seek challenges and tackle them readily. But I recently noticed something very disturbing..,

Because I’m introverted, I have a tendency to stay in limiting business situations too long.

But just when I’m ready to pat myself on the back, something else became apparent…

I’m surrounded by a lot of people that play small.

Oh, maybe not by most people’s standards. But if I’m honest, I have to admit I have surrounded myself with people who give me permission to stay the way I am. And that is the sure path to mediocrity.

I got in many business partnerships 10, 15, or even 20 years ago that I’m still in. Some are suppliers, some are partners, and others are simply colleagues that I may brainstorm with. I attracted these people when I was vibrating at a much lower consciousness, and had a much smaller vision of myself and my work. And how do I say this delicately…

While I’ve been growing my vision, not all of these people have been. So when I announce a new project, or come up with a new idea, I have to sell them on it. They doubt the feasibility or think I’m aiming too big. And kind of like “the devil you know” cliché, I’ve settled for people I know and am comfortable with, instead of going out and attracting new people who would challenge me more.

This is not an indictment of the people in my world. They all have their own lives and get to make their own choices. This is an indictment on my own issues. Settling for the familiar and comfortable, instead of going for awesome. That is now officially over.

But enough about my drama. I share it only in that it may contain a lesson for you.

Are you open to change? Are you constantly seeking it? And have you surrounded yourself with people that challenge you to grow – or give you permission to stay in your comfort zone? Are you ready to be AWESOME!
  Please share your thoughts below.

HABITUAL THINKING...

Habitual thinking.

And nothing does more to keep you down, hold you back and prevent your prosperity than getting mired in a stale thought pattern. It’s the ultimate limiting belief, because it precludes most possibility thinking.

You don’t want to do things that “everyone else” does, because “everyone else” is broke. And probably unhealthy. And probably unhappy. They think exactly like their parents thought, who thought exactly like their parents thought, and this cycle has go on sometimes for decades. So this is not the model you want to follow.

Prosperity is often the byproduct of innovation. And innovation requires critical thinking, lateral thinking and creativity. So what do you do to nurture yours?

Do you always eat the same thing at the same place, take the same way to work and hang out with the same people? When’s the last time you really questioned your core foundational beliefs about money, relationships, religion, or government?

Do you solve Sudoku puzzles, word games, brainteasers, and other things to stimulate your mental capacity? Do you watch programs of people who have opposite political viewpoints than you? Is your inner circle all people who agree with you, or does it reflect diversity of opinion?

The ability to avoid habitual thinking and actually use a larger percentage of the computing power you have at your disposal makes a huge difference in your success and prosperity.

So how you doing on that?

PROSPERITY FORMULA...

Over our expereinces in life we’ve learned the role of vision, beliefs and programming to your achievements, prosperity and success. Now let’s wrap it all together is a simple formula for manifesting your dream life.

Notice I didn’t say easy. But it is simple. And it doesn’t have to be hard unless you want it to be.

Here’s what we know so far:

1) Your vision determines your reality.
2) Your vision is created by your beliefs.
3) Your beliefs are the result of your programming.

So when things aren’t working the way you want in your life, how do you change them?

Simply reverse the process.

1) Take charge of your programming and tilt it to positive.
2) Positive programming creates positive beliefs.
3) Positive beliefs allow you to nurture an epic vision for yourself. This creates step…
4) Daily actions that take you closer to your vision.

Change your programming and your beliefs will be reshaped. Reshape your beliefs and you upgrade your vision. Upgrade your vision to one that excites you and you believe in. That is what creates the daily motivation, which produces the daily habits, which take you where you want to be.
Ain’t it great!

YOU CAN SEE THE FUTURE...

You can see the future with a vision

Study your present situation throughly. Go over in your imagination the various courses of action possible to you. Visualize the consequences which can follow from each course.Pick out the course which gives you the most promise and go ahead.

Many successful people use this skill of mental visualization. They mentally run through important events before they happen.

Picture yourself in your minds eye as already having achieved your goal. See yourself doing the things you’ll be doing when you’ve reached your goal.

You can put your subconscious to work toward making your mental pictures come true. Go over your day in your imagination before you begin it. You can begin acting successfully at any moment. See the things you want as already yours. Think of them as yours, as already in your possession. What you can see in your mind, you can get.

WALK YOUR OWN WALK

WALK YOUR OWN WALK
;

Don't be Afraid

                                                                       Don't be Afraid...

Here we are, afraid of losing what we have all the time, holding on to it so tight that not a soul can touch it. We think by hiding it from the world, it’s hidden and it’s ours. Nothing is. Nothing ever will be. For, nothing ever was.

If you think there is anything that you have, that’s yours, be it money, a house, a job, or a girlfriend… it’s nothing but an illusion. It’ll all disappear… in one blow. One blow, my man.

Here we are, so insecure that we are afraid of re-starting our lives, so we just carry on trying to sort out the current mess. The thought that we should give it all up and just start all over – with nothing – might cross our minds some time, sure, but we get scared and we push away anything that scares us.

There is nothing I can ever achieve or gain that I cannot lose, in a matter of seconds. You have never gained enough to not be able to lose it all, in just a few minutes. What you think is yours, was never yours and will never be yours. Whatever you make here, you leave here. You came naked and you’re going to go back naked.

So what are you afraid of?

Let all be lost. Let them take away everything. As long as you have your heart beating strong, as long as you have your nostrils working fine, as long as the blood flows in your veins, you will live, you will breathe and you can get it all back… again and again. For, if you can do it once, you can damn well do it again. It’s just a game we play – Life.

Keep Your Dream...

I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money for youth at risk programs.
The last time I was there he introduced me by saying, “I want to tell you why I let Jack use my horse. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses. As a result, the boy’s high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.

“That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.

“He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after class.’

“The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, `Why did I receive an F?’
“The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you’ll have to pay large stud fees. There’s no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher added, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.’

“The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for you.’ “Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all.

He stated, “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.”

Monty then turned to the assembled group and said, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace.” He added, “The best part of the story is that two summers ago that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.” When the teacher was leaving, he said, “Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption not to give up on yours.”

“Don’t let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.”
